Ruth Amos

Ruth Amos

My name is Ruth Amos, 20; I was Young Engineer for Britain 2006, with my idea, The StairSteady. The StairSteady is an aid to enable people with limited mobility to use their stairs confidently and safely. The StairSteady was designed as my GCSE resistant materials project as a response to my teacher’s challenge to design an aid to enable people with limited mobility to use their stairs. He was prompted to do this as his father had recently had a stroke. The project was seen by Advanced Engineering Techniques Ltd at Halfway (who now have manufacturing rights). AET thought that the project had potential and offered me research and development support, as well as producing prototypes and giving me full use of their engineering facilities. Being a local company the catchment area for jobs is in the surrounding area which is good for the local economy. The design has been patented and the name trademarked. The company StairSteady Ltd was set up four years ago to protect the product and bring it to market which I achieved last year while studying for my A-levels. I have now taken three years out before going to University to run StairSteady Ltd full time and organise the distribution and fitting of the StairSteady across the UK, looking at distributing abroad in the near future. The product was launched in April 2008 and Naidex, a national healthcare show and we started trading September 2008. We fit across the whole of the UK and supply to councils, the general public and work with mobility shops. We have recently forged a link with Minivator, the UKs second largest manufacturers of stair lifts, with the hope of getting some council bids and to improve our links within the sector.

I have worked on projects to help promote enterprise in school, and talk in schools regularly. I am also a Make Your Mark ambassador, was Young Entrepreneurs (runner up) 2006, Derbyshire Young Achiever 2006 and Intel Science and Engineering Fair finalist 2008, a speakeasy4schools ambassador, and enterprise Role model in South Yorkshire and speak at events across the country promoting engineering and enterprise. I presented the project ‘going it alone’ a video made with speakeasy4schools and Business education South Yorkshire to educate adults wanting to set up a business giving them ‘real life’ help and encouragement. In 2006 I was a guest speaker at IET (Institute of Electrical Engineers) national conference alongside Sir Robin Saxby- chairman of ARM holdings. In 2208 I attended the Intel ISEF science and engineering fair in Atlanta representing the UK in mechanical Engineering. I also spoke at the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce ‘Inspiring Women’ event at the Lyceum, Sheffield. I have been named as the youngest person ever to be on Management Today’s 35 women under 35 in their 2009 list, and winner of the women of the Future ‘young star’ Award. I am passionate about education and am a STEM ambassador as well as being part of the Bloodhound SSC land speed record ambassador scheme. In May 2010 I was on the Yorkshire 42 under 42 and in September of that year I was a ‘women of achievement’ by the Women of the Year Foundation.
